چکیده

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Good Practice Guidance (IPCC GPG) (IPCC 2003), remote sensing methods are especially suitable for independent verifying the national Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) carbon pool estimates, especially the aboveground biomass. In the present study, we demonstrate the potential to integrate standwise inventory data, ASTER and MODIS satellite data for characterizing stand volume (m ha) and aboveground biomass of trees (t ha) in boreal forests landscape in the southern Finland. The simultaneous use of high and coarse resolution images is essential especially when estimating these forest characteristics for extensive areas where ground data are not available or are limited. In this study, the regression models computed using standwise forest inventory data and ASTER satellite images were utilized with the MODIS data.

Biomass estimation over a large area based on standwise forest inventory data and ASTER and MODIS satellite data: A possibility to verify carbon inventories

According to the IPCC GPG (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Good Practice Guidance), remote sensing methods are especially suitable for independent verification of the national LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry) carbon pool estimates, particularly the aboveground biomass. In the present study, we demonstrate the potential of standwise (forest stand is a homogenous forest...

Estimating biomass for boreal forests using ASTER satellite data combined with standwise forest inventory data

In the present study, the suitability of optical ASTER satellite data (with 9 spectral bands) for estimating the biomass of boreal forest stands in mineral soils was tested. The remote sensing data were analysed and tested together with standwise forest inventory data. Stand volume estimates were converted to aboveground tree biomass using biomass expansion factors, and the aboveground biomass ...

National Forest Aboveground Biomass Mapping from ICESat/GLAS Data and MODIS Imagery in China

Forest aboveground biomass (AGB) was mapped throughout China using large footprint LiDAR waveform data from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) onboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) imagery and forest inventory data. The entire land of China was divided into seven zones according to the geographic charac...

The Penetration Depth Derived from the Synthesis of ALOS/PALSAR InSAR Data and ASTER GDEM for the Mapping of Forest Biomass

The Global Digital Elevation Model produced from stereo images of Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer data (ASTER GDEM) covers land surfaces between latitudes of 83°N and 83°S. The Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) onboard Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) collected many SAR images since it was launched on 24 January 2006. The combinati...

Forest above Ground Biomass Inversion by Fusing GLAS with Optical Remote Sensing Data

Forest biomass is an important parameter for quantifying and understanding biological and physical processes on the Earth’s surface. Rapid, reliable, and objective estimations of forest biomass are essential to terrestrial ecosystem research. The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) produced substantial scientific data for detecting the vegetation structure at the footprint level. This stud...
